Students Benefits Most from ICT, says Varsity Rector.

Kota Samarahan: Information and Communication Technology (ICT) began in the mid 90’s, when broadband was considered as a luxury then. However, since the turn of the new millennium, it has become an important basic infrastructure in industrial development, commerce and education.

Rector of University Technology Mara (UiTM) Sarawak, Prof Dr Jamil Hamila at the launch of an ICT Expo at the varsity’s campus here yesterday, said the event aimed to promote the use of broadband as it played a pivotal role in the economic, social and educational development og the nation.

The event was organised jointly by the varsity’s Library Department and Telekom Malaysia Bhd Sarawak.

“The latest product, High Speed Broadband, has benefited the society especially in the field of education and the National Broadband Initiative (NBI) has been recognised by world renowned companies such as Microsoft and the International Telecommunications Union.

“The NBI includes strengthening public cellular coverage where 873 telecommunication towers will be built across the country, with 278 in Sabah and Sarawak. “Slogans such as ‘Information on our fingertips’, ‘Information is power’, and ‘Information is the commodity’ and ‘World Without Borders’ should change of the importance of obtaining information quickly, accurately and correctly,” Jamil added.

When asked to comment on the abuse of technology, Jamil said it is hard to control its usage. However, students have been urged to benefit modern technology, not to abuse it.

We have our student affairs department and legal office which are responsible in taking action against students who try to affect the image of the university by posing some videos or rumours.

“There are also some people who like to use the name of UiTM to create some rumours on the internet,” he said.

Jamil remarked that ICT had also become a convenient and fast way for students to enter the university.

“Our university website has a comprehensive guide for the students to apply for the course of their choice and this is a great help for rural students as they need not have to come to the university. This all could be done on the computer,” he said.

He also informed the media that the extension of the Kota Samarahan Campus here started last February and would be completed in two years time. When completed, it would be able to accommodate another 4,000 students.

The earth-breaking ceremony for the Mukah campus will be held on 9 April. The 500-acre plot was allocated by the state government and the project is estimated to be completed in three years.

“Presently, we have approximately 270 students in Mukah and we are temporary making use of shop lots for lecture rooms,” said Jamil.
